If your tooth is too damaged to be repaired by a filling but does not need a full crown, our dentist may recommend a dental inlay or onlay. Inlays and onlays, also known as partial crowns, are a conservative restorative treatment. They are designed to repair and restore the tooth with minimal removal of your original tooth structure and to help strengthen the tooth.
Inlays and onlays are custom-created and are usually made from porcelain, composite resin material or gold. They are designed to fit your tooth perfectly and are nearly undetectable once placed in your tooth. Because inlays and onlays are custom-made restorations, they usually require two appointments to complete.
The difference between inlays and onlays is simple. An inlay is used when the damage does not reach the cusps (the pointed ends on the chewing surface) of the tooth. An onlay is used when one or more of the cusps is damaged. Our dentist will carefully examine your teeth to determine whether an inlay or an onlay will be more beneficial for your needs.
